On day 3, after Oku hotaka summit, the trail becomes scrambled, rocky terrain.

The route is famous for Japanese climbers due to its difficulty and beauty. Common nickname for this route is ‘Gendarme (Jandarumu)’ ‘Jan’ which is the name of dome-shaped characteristic rocky tower on the route.
The course starts with Umanose knife ridge which means ‘horse back’.
Yes, the ridge is almost as narrow as a horse.
Then the gendarme appear (3,163 m).
On the northern side of the Gendarum, the donkey’s ear, the steep slimming ridge is called horseshoe.
